Time to catch up a bit, solar oven, unemployed, back to school, etc.

Well folks, a dear friend of mine just got through telling me today that I need to update my blog. Seems as if he enjoys reading the ramblings of this miscreant ironworker that is trying to better himself. So with that in mind (and the possibility that you may never again read anything that I place in print either on or offline) I place fingers to keyboard to see what may in fact pour out of my unconsciousness and onto the digital page…
I guess first I should update you to my current status from my last entry. During my last episodic venture I was unemployed and enjoying some time off of a fairly long stretch of overtime hours. There are a few happenings of note that I will place here for your perusal. First of all I did not remain unemployed for any real length of time. I went back to work on June 4th on a small bank being erected across the street from Hooters Restaurant in Bloomington, IL. and just down the street from the Culvers which is on the east side of that town. Now you may not understand the import of this until I make mention that even though I am still a fairly young (46), mostly healthy, virile man, I was more excited to be near Culvers with it’s “Concrete Mixers” frozen custard than I was to be near Hooters. I attribute this to being happily married to my lovely wife, Jean. So, I’m back to work connecting iron (which I have not done in over 10 years) on a small building, working 40 hours or so a week, and just generally enjoying life.
Some other things that have happened since my last update are:
Our son Michael graduated from High School. He had an excellent turn out at his open house here in Downs. Many people came to congratulate him on this accomplishment and to find out what his plans are for the future. Mike has since gone off to basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, once he is finished there (around August 20th or so) he will be off to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina for his AIT. In case you don’t remember, I’m quite proud to be a father of an Illinois Army National Guardsman. All in all I expect a much changed young man to come back to us this fall after his training is over with. We talked to him a week or so ago and his statement was that he was doing fine. I asked if he had been gassed yet and he said yes, and he was wanting to do it again! I remember that when I went through it I NEVER wanted to experience that again!
I have also acquired a new “toy” in the form of a Solar Oven. This is a new method of cooking for me as it uses NO fuel source other than the sun itself. It is really a novel method of cooking food and works quite well without heating up your house or using sometimes expensive fuel sources such as gas or electricity. Not to mention that it does not pollute our environment in any way! Here are some pictures of a roast that I cooked as my first cooking project:
The Sun Oven itself.
The interior of the Sun Oven which is basically a black box with a cradle in it to keep the food tray level.
The raw chuck roast I used for my first cooking project in the oven.
The roast after 6 hours of cooking time (it was actually done after about 4 hours but I decided to cook it longer to see if the claim that you can’t burn food in this cooker was true or not, it was!). If only you could smell this as well, it was delicious. To date we have cooked a chuck roast, cornish hens, ribs and brownies in the sun oven.
