Dr. Dobson says stop the attempt to remove Christmas….

I say remove the commercialization of Christmas instead. I say don’t worry about people who insist on saying such comments as “happy holidays” and “holiday season” as they don’t really matter. NO ONE can stop Christmas and NO ONE is able to remove what Christmas means to all Christians. Christmas is NOT about whether or not Best Buy or Circuit City advertises Merry Christmas or if they declare Happy Holidays instead. Christmas is NOT about whether or not certain corporations try to restrict their employees from wishing others a Merry Christmas and instead use the more general Happy Holidays. It is NOT about whether or not Dick’s Sporting Goods or K’Mart has placed references towards Christmas onto their website or not, nope, not about all of those no matter how much the good Dr. wishes you to believe it (and believe me, usually the good Dr. and I agree on most topics). In tonights Focus on the Family, November 26th, 2007, Dr. Dobson focus’ on these aspects of the Christmas season (or dare I call it the “holiday season”?). Instead I say he should have attacked a much more deliberate and debilitating attack on this revered Christian holiday. That being the continued and overbearing populating of commercialization of Christmas.
Ask children and adults alike what Christmas is about and I would venture to guess that the answers you will get will run the gamut of anything from a time of getting gifts, vacation from school, lot’s of food to eat, party time, and finally (if we are truly lucky) the celebration of the birth of the Christ child. Unfortunately it will most likely be in that or a similar order to it. Our fascination with the commercialization has gotten to the point that a lot of people I know are actually doing their Christmas shopping as early as JULY! The local businesses are beginning to offer Christmas sales well before the traditional “Black Friday” sale date and other Thanksgiving sales. Dr. Dobson was worried that we would lose the focus of Christmas because of a few words (which by the way are TRADITIONAL holiday greetings anyway) were used to replace the more pointed “Merry Christmas” that has been used in the past. I say we have already lost focus on Christmas because of the rampant merchandising that has occurred in the last 30 years! There was also one other item that appeared on the good Dr.’s show that disturbed me as well. At the end of the broadcast, he plugged purchasing merchandise from his ministry as well. I guess though that if you are going to spend money buying items at Christmas time then it might as well be from a source that will use a portion of the proceeds to further the ministry of Christ.
Please keep the focus of Christmas in your homes on the real meaning. That being the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and upon his subsequent ministry. Remember that without Him we are lost and salvation is only through your acceptance of Jesus as your Lord. Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and an otherwise wonderful Holiday Season!

Well spoken Jack!
I had never ever heard of this “happy holidays” phraseology until I came to the USA. It just doesn’t get said in the UK. Now, that isn’t to say that the UK is still so entrenched in Christianity and their beliefs that they wouldn;t dare to not say Merry Christmas. Far from it! People are much more openly verbal about their faith in the US than in the UK – call it whatever – maybe the stiff British upper lip. Either way, the UK hasn’t fallen to renaming the celebration of Christ’s birth to something non-descript……so far!
