Welcome to my little corner of the Internet. Here you will find different musings and descriptions of the various happenings in my life. Anything from political and religious opinions to fantastical writings that have absolutely nothing to do with anything important. Some days I may write about my educational adventures and others I may be writing about the rising price of gasoline, you just never know. So, if this is your cup of tea or if you are just looking for the entertainment of reading other people's thoughts, I welcome you and invite you to subscribe to my blog (look for the link in the sidebar). The Shadow’s film picks for 2008

I recently posted these on the UFP-Squad forums but figured I would expand upon my choices here for you all to read.

21

Release Date: March 28th, 2008
Director: Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law)
Starring: Jim Sturgess, Aaron Yoo, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne
Synopsis: 21 is the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.
The Hype: The trailer makes this look like it could be the next best Vegas / cards movie with a great cast, and it’s based off of a great book to start.
Shadows Comments: Looks like a great rendition of the true story of a card counting gang who literally took Vegas for a bundle. Make sure you watch this one.

Be Kind Rewind

Release Date: January 25th, 2008
Director: Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Science of Sleep)
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz
Synopsis: A man (Black) whose brain becomes magnetized unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend’s video store. In order to satisfy the store’s most loyal renter, an aging woman with signs of dementia, the two men set out to remake the lost films, which include Back to the Future, The Lion King, and RoboCop.
The Hype: If you haven’t seen it, watch the trailer now. Not only will VHS nostalgia hit hard, but you can’t go wrong with the immensely creative Michel Gondry, Jack Black, and Mos Def all working together!
Shadow’s Comments: It’s a Jack Black movie, what more can I say, I like Jack Black movies! But honestly, it looks fairly well done for the concept that it is.

New Year, New Goals, New ideas

Who knows, maybe a new me. Anyway here goes….

School has started, I’m taking an online history course this semester coupled with my second semester of Cisco (working towards my CCNA certification) at Heartland College. Now this is nothing really new to those who have been here before but I am still hard at work towards achieving this goal. I’m currently gone two nights a week (verses the 4 nights I was gone last semester) which will make my home life a little less hectic and make Jean’s evenings more interesting (oh no, he’s going to be home more now!!). My online class will most likely take up more time though due to the nature of online classes being more intensive than more traditional class work.

I’m still currently out of work but I hope that will change shortly. We are just having to tighten our belts a bit in between times and that is nothing new for us as I’ve been at this routine for 18 years now so it’s just the same old routine. That’s not all bad though as Jean now has both her and I on Spark People which is primarily a diet community on the internet but can be used for fulfilling other goals as well. I’m using Spark People to quit drinking pepsi (4 days and counting) and to lose up to 50 pounds or more. My immediate goal is to lose 20 pounds by St. Patties Day (mainly so I can eat more corned beef and cabbage LOL). Anyway as soon as I get my sig composed you can follow my progress through that. I would invite you to see my Spark People page but in order to do so you need to start your own account there (it’s free). If you decide you wish to start an account be certain to use me as a referral so I get the points. My account name is UFPShadowchaser.

So, anyway, here I’m sitting just trying to come up with some sort of interesting material to relate to you and I suppose it will most likely be items I’ve been finding on the net for me to share with you. I’ve made mention about this online radio utility before but just in case you missed it I’m mentioning it again. That would be Nexus, a free online radio that has literally hundreds of stations to choose from. It even has a toolbar that works with Firefox (and those of you who know me know I’m a huge fan of Firefox) so you can rock out while you surf the net.

One of the tools I’ve really fell in love with is Homepage Startup. Homepage Startup is a start page where you can arrange and enter 12 different sites per page that you commonly go to on the net. This allows you to use your bookmarks less and just click on the sites you really wish to check out first thing. For example, I have numerous message forums listed as well as my college sites and my bank login screen. These are shown as both text and a thumbnail of the site itself so you can’t mistake exactly what it is. Not only that but if you wish to have more than 12 sites listed you are able to add other tabs and to organize them as well. You could have tabs for forums, a tab for online games, a tab for music sites, etc., etc…..

Could this be a forewarning of the apocalypse? There are a number of people who see technology like this that could be misused by the establishment in order to “spy” on us Big Brother style! There have even been a number of movies that have been created upon those themes so what do you think? Should we be wary of digitizing and incorporating our health and financial information into embedded I.C. Chips or carried devices such as this? Just how secure would this type of information be and moreover, how safe is this radio frequency (for it would have to be some type of broadcasting chip) be upon our frail human bodies? Are we setting ourselves up for health issues such as an increased chance of cancer or are we just going to have to worry about Big Brother knowing all about where we go, how we spend our off time, how we spend our money, and everything else that leads to the deletion of our individual privacy? I’m certain that the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security are all for tracking systems such as this. Read this article and make up your own mind but remember this, the government is not supposed to be ALL-KNOWING when it comes to the activities of it’s citizens. Down that path lies the death of privacy and individual rights.

A little type of a game for you….

Just a way to generate a bit of traffic and a bit of participation (hopefully) on my blog. Below you will find an image of something I’ve found on the internet, it’s your job to try to identify it and what it’s purpose is. After a few days I will reveal the answer and will post another image for you to guess at. If this works out ok then I will continue to play this little guessing game. Please take the time to make a guess and let us all know what it might be. Here’s our first image:
