Everything you needed to know about shadowchaser

Jack Corzine has written 148 post in this blog.

I'm a 49 year old Union Ironworker who has numerous interests. Currently I am close to receiving my AAS in Network Administration in Security and am seeking a career change over to the IT field. I love to cook, love my wife and family, and love to live life as fully as I am able to and I try to reflect that in my writings here. Hopefully you will be able to take something from what I place here and put it to good use. Please feel free to comment on anything you wish to here, tell your friends about this website and come back for me. May the Lord God bless and keep you.

Hey I believe that I mentioned that one of my summer projects was going to be designing and building a water wall for my lovely wife to enjoy. Where this project is not complete, phase one of the project is done.  Let me take just a moment to detail what went into this project and then explain where it is going from here.

The design came to me after watching numerous episodes of those do-it yourself programs that are on HGTV. Almost all of the shows that deal with outside renovations feature some form of water feature. My wife loves the sound of running water so wherever possible I have added a water feature. At our house on Hemlock St. we had a couple of different ponds with fountains in them. We were unable to have a pond on North West Street in Le Roy so we settled for indoor fountains. I decided that it was time for a new water feature.

Now to design a suitably unique water feature for my wife but to do so in an inexpensive manner since my job situation this year has been horrendous to say the least. I tend to be the type to find objects that are being disposed of and attempt to find a use for them at home. This is how I came to acquire about 50% of the materials for this project. Let me list the materials here:

1. 35 or 40 gal rubber tub with lid ~$15 @ Meiers
2. 7 foot 2″ PVC pipe (sch. 40 from jobsite)
3. 2 PVC elbows
4. Two 2″ to 3/4″ reducers
5. Two 3/4″ to 1/2″ nipples
6. 20 foot clear 1/2″ tubing
7. Suitable pump for the amount of lift needed
8. Extruded metal mesh
9. 100 lbs. of river rock
10. Landscape block (from jobsite so contractor did not need to dispose of it)
11. Rubber roofing material (from jobsite)
12. Two 4X4 treated posts (existing from privacy fence that was there)
Qe. Two bleacher seats (recycled from jobsite)

Now to the build. We started out with excavating the hole to place the tub into. Place tub into hole ensuring that youfill the space between the side of the tub and the bank with fill dirt. Place lid on tub and cut hole in center of lid to allow water into tub. Remove lid and place pump int tub and replace lid woth tubing arranged through the access hole. Now we placed the rubber membrane on top of the tub making sure to cut the access hole and place the flaps of the cut into the hole to try to prevent water from running under the membrane (this is inevitable but it can be minimized). After the membrane comes the mesh and then the river rock. The base is now complete.

For the top we merely measured between the uprights, allowed for some space for the elbows, dry fit them to make sure they were correct. Once this was done we glued the elbows on, making sure they were square with each other. Next we glued on the reducers and the nipples. Then we drilled 1/8″ holes about 1/4″ apart just along the pipe that was directly over the tub. Mounting the pipe merely took scabbing a piece of wood at the right height and using nails on each side of the elbows to center the pipe. Hooked up the tubing from the pump and it was done.

Now we laid one course of landscaping block and draping the rubber membrane over that course.  Now we continue laying the block until we run out of block. Note: this block is not mortared as we may have to make adjustments later on and this type of block uses a keyway system.

Once that was finished we are basically to the point you see in the pictures here. All I have left to do is sand, stain, and seal the bleacher seats. Afix them to the top of the psts to hide the pipe. Buy and attach some spotlights inside the seats angled to shine on the water. That will have to wait until I get some money. Hope you enjoyed the build!
